Central Otago
New Zealand
About Central Otago
The world's most southerly wine region, Central Otago in New Zealand's South Island is a dramatic landscape of mountains, lakes, and schist-covered hillsides. Its continental climate, rare in New Zealand, delivers hot days and cold nights with very low rainfall. This extreme environment produces Pinot Noir of exceptional intensity, with dark fruit, silky texture, and mineral depth. Six distinct sub-regions (Bannockburn, Gibbston, Cromwell Basin, Wanaka, Bendigo, Alexandra) each contribute unique characteristics shaped by altitude, aspect, and proximity to lakes.

Terroir & Character
Climate
Extreme continental climate with hot, dry summers and very cold winters. The massive diurnal temperature swings (up to 20°C difference) create long, slow ripening that builds intense flavors while maintaining bright acidity.
Terroir
Ancient schist and semi-arid soils with excellent drainage, combined with steep slopes and high altitude vineyards (200-400m elevation). The rocky, mineral-rich soils and dramatic topography create wines with distinctive minerality and concentrated flavors.
