Climate
The northern and southern sectors experience slightly cooler conditions than the central Côte de Nuits due to their more exposed positions and higher elevations. The fragmented vineyard locations create varied microclimates with generally good air circulation that reduces frost risk but can result in less heat accumulation during ripening.
Terroir
The Côte de Nuits-Villages sits on Jurassic limestone bedrock, primarily Bathonian and Bajocian formations rich in marine fossils including belemnites and ammonites. The limestone provides excellent drainage while allowing vine roots to penetrate deeply, with a relatively high water table that provides consistent moisture during dry periods.
