Terroir & Character

Climate

These outer vineyard sites experience slightly cooler temperatures and more exposure to wind than the protected valley sites of Chablis proper. The elevated, exposed positions result in earlier ripening challenges and more vintage variation than the sheltered premier cru slopes.

Terroir

Portlandian limestone

Petit Chablis vineyards sit on Portlandian limestone from the Upper Jurassic period, characterized by harder, less fossiliferous limestone than the Kimmeridgian soils of premier and grand cru sites. This compact limestone bedrock provides good drainage but limits root penetration compared to the softer marls found in higher classifications, resulting in vines that must work harder for nutrients and water.
