Malvasia Istriana

Also known as Malvazija Istarska in Istria

Moderate climate

About

The dry, salty Malvasia of the upper Adriatic, at home in Friuli's Collio and Isonzo and on the iron-red pockets of the Carso, and across the border in Istria as Malvazija Istarska. Acacia and pear up front, a saline snap behind, it is the white that tastes of the sea breeze it grows in. A different variety from the sweet Malvasia family of Madeira and the islands, and one of the Adriatic's most quietly distinguished whites.

Aging

Most are at their best inside 1-4 years; skin-contact and old-vine Carso versions reward 8 or more.

Growing regions

How the grape expresses across places, grouped by country. Chips call out how a region's style deviates from the grape's default.
