Terroir & Classification
Soils
The bedrock consists primarily of Devonian slate formations dating back 400 million years, with layers of blue slate and scattered volcanic intrusions creating complex drainage patterns. The steep slate slopes provide excellent drainage while forcing vine roots deep into fractured bedrock, with the dark slate retaining heat and reflecting it back to the vines.
Classification
Village appellation. No classified premier cru vineyards, but the village-level wines consistently offer genuine Mosel character at approachable prices.
Elevation
100-380m, primarily south and southwest-facing terraced slopes
Microclimate
The dramatic terraced slopes and river proximity create a warmer microclimate than the upper Mosel, with increased heat retention from the slate terraces and protection from cold winds. The steep Calmont and surrounding sites benefit from extended sun exposure and reflected heat from the river below.
Typical Aromas
Grapes of Mosel
