Arganza

Bierzo

Northern Bierzo, with paraje-level vineyards strung along the foothills above the Cúa valley. Slate-and-clay soils produce structured, savoury Mencía at slightly cooler altitudes than the Ponferrada flatlands.

The wines of Arganza are made primarily from Godello, Mencía.

Climate

A sheltered basin between the Sierra de Ancares and the Aquilianos. Warmer days and cooler nights than the surrounding mountains, with the highest humidity in the DO. The valley floor carries more spring frost risk than the slopes above; harvest tends to be earlier.

Terroir

SlateClayLoam

River-terrace soils of clay, sand, and rounded gravels deposited by the Sil and Cúa over millennia. Deeper, more fertile, and easier to work than the slate slopes above. Vines yield more, with rounder, more immediate fruit; the heart of the DO's village-level bottlings.
