About Monterrei

A small, inland Galician DO hugging the Portuguese border in the Támega valley. More continental than the rest of Galicia, with greater diurnal temperature swings and a warmer growing season, Monterrei produces a different style than its rainier western neighbours: fuller, rounder Godello whites with riper aromatics, and Mencía reds with more body and colour. Two subzones span the DO — Val de Monterrei (the valley floor, with sandy loam over granite) and Ladera de Monterrei (the schist and slate hillsides, at higher elevation with more tension). A 2025 expansion brought the northern hills of Laza into the DO, recognising the quality of cool-climate sites previously outside the official boundaries. Producers like Quinta da Muradella and Gargalo are pushing a more single-vineyard, terroir-driven style.

Terroir & Character

Climate

ContinentalWarm summersCool nightsDrier than coastal GaliciaStrong diurnals

The warmest and driest of the Galician DOs — more continental than Atlantic, though still influenced by the Támega river. Summers are hot (often topping 35°C) with strong diurnal variation; winters are cold, sometimes with heavy frost. Less rainfall than Rías Baixas or Ribeiro means riper, rounder fruit with gentler acidity.

Terroir

Sandy loamGraniteSchistSlate

The valley floor (Val de Monterrei) has sandy loam over granite, favouring riper, more generous whites. The hillside subzone (Ladera de Monterrei) sits on schist and slate at higher elevation, giving wines of firmer structure and more mineral cut.

Classification System

Spanish Quality Hierarchy

Spain's wine-quality pyramid, administered under the EU Protected Designation of Origin (DOP) framework. The two top legal tiers — DOCa and DOQ — have only been awarded to two regions in the country. Every wine DO in Spain sits somewhere on this ladder.

DOCa / DOQ

Denominación de Origen Calificada (Castilian) / Denominació d'Origen Qualificada (Catalan). Spain's highest wine classification — awarded only to Rioja (1991) and Priorat (2009)

DO

Denominación de Origen — the main quality tier. Most Spanish wine regions (Bierzo, Rueda, Ribera del Duero, Rías Baixas, etc.) are DOs

Vinos de Pago (VP)

Single-estate designation for exceptional individual vineyards, outside the regional DO system. Currently around 20 properties nationwide (Dominio de Valdepusa, Pago de Otazu, etc.)

VC / Vino de Calidad

Vino de Calidad con Indicación Geográfica — a stepping-stone tier below DO, used by emerging regions building a track record toward full DO status

VT / Vino de la Tierra

Protected Geographical Indication (IGP) — a broader regional tier. Equivalent to France's IGP / Italy's IGT

Vino (without GI)

Basic table wine without a geographic designation

Varietal Classification

Monterrei distinguishes wines by their varietal composition. The 'Superior' tier is a quality designation reserved for wines built on the DO's preferred indigenous grapes.

Monterrei Superior

Premium tier — wines from at least 85% preferred varieties (Godello, Treixadura, Doña Blanca for whites; Mencía, Bastardo for reds)

Monterrei Blanco / Tinto

Standard DO whites and reds, allowing broader varietal blends

Monterrei Rosado

Rosados added to the DO in 2025, principally from Mencía
