Ponferrada

Bierzo

The largest town and administrative heart of the Bierzo, sitting where the Sil river meets the surrounding slate slopes. The municipio extends across some of the warmest, most-planted Bierzo flatlands and produces a long bench of paraje-labelled Mencía from producers who farm parcels right up to the town's edges.

The wines of Ponferrada are made primarily from Godello, Mencía.

Climate

A sheltered basin between the Sierra de Ancares and the Aquilianos. Warmer days and cooler nights than the surrounding mountains, with the highest humidity in the DO. The valley floor carries more spring frost risk than the slopes above; harvest tends to be earlier.

Terroir

SlateSchistClayAlluvial

River-terrace soils of clay, sand, and rounded gravels deposited by the Sil and Cúa over millennia. Deeper, more fertile, and easier to work than the slate slopes above. Vines yield more, with rounder, more immediate fruit; the heart of the DO's village-level bottlings.
