Sancedo

Bierzo

Northern Bierzo on the slopes above Cacabelos. Slate-and-clay soils at slightly cooler altitudes, producing structured Mencía with savoury, herbal aromatics.

The wines of Sancedo are made primarily from Godello, Mencía.

Vineyard Map

Climate

A sheltered basin between the Sierra de Ancares and the Aquilianos. Warmer days and cooler nights than the surrounding mountains, with the highest humidity in the DO. The valley floor carries more spring frost risk than the slopes above; harvest tends to be earlier.

Terroir

SlateClay

River-terrace soils of clay, sand, and rounded gravels deposited by the Sil and Cúa over millennia. Deeper, more fertile, and easier to work than the slate slopes above. Vines yield more, with rounder, more immediate fruit; the heart of the DO's village-level bottlings.
