The vineyards of Aloxe-Corton sit on Jurassic limestone and marl formations from the Bathonian and Bajocian periods, rich in fossilized marine life including oysters and ammonites. The bedrock creates excellent drainage on the slopes while the marl layers provide water retention, allowing vine roots to penetrate deep into the calcareous subsoil.
