Climate
Being the northernmost appellation of the Côte de Nuits, Marsannay experiences slightly cooler temperatures and later ripening than its southern neighbors, with good air circulation from the Combe de Lavaux helping to moderate humidity and reduce frost risk.
Terroir
Marsannay sits on Jurassic limestone bedrock overlain with Bajocian and Bathonian marls, creating a complex soil structure with excellent drainage through the limestone base while retaining some moisture in the marl layers. The presence of Quaternary gravel deposits from ancient alluvial fans provides additional drainage, allowing vine roots to penetrate deeply into the fractured limestone substrate.
