Terroir & Character
Climate
The southeastern exposure and higher elevation create a cooler microclimate than neighboring Mercurey, with good morning sun exposure but protection from excessive afternoon heat. The limestone soils reflect sunlight and moderate temperature extremes, contributing to the fresh, mineral character of the wines.
Terroir
The vineyards sit on Jurassic limestone bedrock from the Bathonian and Bajocian periods, rich in marine fossils including belemnites and brachiopods. The well-draining limestone soils are relatively thin, forcing vine roots deep into the fractured bedrock where they access mineral-rich water reserves. This geological structure provides excellent drainage while maintaining sufficient water retention through the limestone's porosity.
