Terroir & Character

Climate

The southeastern exposure and sheltered valley position create a slightly warmer microclimate than Chablis to the north, with good air circulation that reduces frost risk. The limestone soils reflect heat during the day while moderating temperature swings, ideal for Sauvignon Blanc's aromatic development.

Terroir

Kimmeridgian limestone

Saint-Bris sits on Kimmeridgian limestone bedrock, the same marine sedimentary formation found in Chablis, rich in fossilized oyster shells (Exogyra virgula) from the Late Jurassic period. This porous limestone provides excellent drainage while allowing vine roots to penetrate deeply, with the water table sitting at moderate depths that ensure consistent but not excessive water supply.
