Terroir & Classification

Soils

Kimmeridgian limestone

Saint-Bris sits on Kimmeridgian limestone bedrock from the Upper Jurassic period, rich in fossilized oyster shells (Exogyra virgula) that create a mineral-rich, well-draining soil matrix. The limestone's natural porosity and fissured structure allows deep root penetration while maintaining good water retention, with excellent natural drainage preventing waterlogging even in wet vintages.

Classification

Village appellation. No classified premier cru vineyards, but the village-level wines consistently offer genuine Burgundy character at approachable prices.

Elevation

150-250m, predominantly south and southeast-facing slopes

Microclimate

The appellation benefits from a slightly warmer and drier microclimate than surrounding Chablis due to its more sheltered position and southern exposure, with less frost risk in spring. The Kimmeridgian soils retain heat during the day and release it gradually at night, extending the growing season for optimal Sauvignon Blanc ripening.
