Terroir & Classification

Soils

LimestoneFlint (silex)ClayTuffeauGravel

The Touraine & Centre sits on Cretaceous limestone bedrock overlaid with tuffeau (soft limestone chalk) formations containing marine fossils, particularly prominent around Vouvray and Montlouis. Clay-limestone soils with flint (silex) deposits from ancient river terraces provide excellent drainage while the porous tuffeau allows deep root penetration. The water table is relatively high due to Loire River proximity, creating natural underground caves that have been carved into the tuffeau for wine storage.

Microclimate

The Loire River and its tributaries create a moderating influence with morning mists that protect against spring frosts, while the river valleys channel warm air that extends the growing season. The region benefits from continental influences tempered by Atlantic moisture, creating ideal conditions for both dry and sweet Chenin Blanc expression.
