About McLaren Vale
McLaren Vale starts where the Adelaide suburbs end and rolls down to the Gulf St Vincent. It's been growing wine since the 1830s, but the modern style is unmistakable: ripe but balanced Shiraz, perfumed old-vine Grenache, structured Cabernet, all kept fresh by afternoon sea breezes off the gulf. There are more soils packed into McLaren Vale than almost any other Australian region, which is why a vineyard in Blewitt Springs tastes nothing like one in Willunga. McLaren Vale also wrote Australia's sustainable-farming playbook through the McLaren Vale Sustainable Winegrowing program. Incredibly diverse soils ranging from ancient Cambrian rocks over 500 million years old to red clay over limestone, sandy loams, and ironstone. The undulating landscape creates multiple mesoclimates, with cooler elevated sites and warmer valley floors, all within a few kilometers of the moderating ocean influence.

Frequently Asked Questions
What makes McLaren Vale wine special?▼
McLaren Vale's magic comes from its perfect storm of geography and climate - it's wedged between the Mount Lofty Ranges and Gulf St Vincent, giving it Mediterranean warmth tempered by cooling sea breezes. The region has incredibly diverse geology with over 40 distinct soil types, plus some seriously old Grenache vines that produce exceptional fruit. This combo creates generous, full-bodied Shiraz and increasingly respected Grenache with real character and depth.
What are the best McLaren Vale vintages?▼
2021 is absolutely the standout - locals are calling it one of the best of the 21st century with high-quality fruit across the board. 2018, 2019, 2020, and 2022 are all solid 4/5 star vintages, each delivering concentrated, high-quality wines despite lower yields. The common thread here is that reduced yields from challenging conditions actually concentrated the flavors beautifully.
What grapes are grown in McLaren Vale?▼
Shiraz (which is Syrah) is absolutely the king here - it's what put McLaren Vale on the map with those generous, full-bodied expressions. Grenache is the rising star though, especially from the region's old vines that are producing increasingly respected wines. While other varieties exist, these two Mediterranean grapes really thrive in McLaren Vale's climate and soils.
Is 2022 a good year for McLaren Vale?▼
Absolutely - 2022 scored 4/5 stars and ranks right up there with the region's best for quality. The wines show intense, rich, and balanced flavors despite being another year of lower yields. It's part of McLaren Vale's recent hot streak of excellent vintages.
When should I drink McLaren Vale 2022?▼
McLaren Vale 2022s are drinking beautifully now thanks to their balanced, approachable style, but they've got the structure to age gracefully for 8-15 years depending on the producer. The Shiraz especially will develop more complexity and tertiary flavors with time, while the Grenache tends to be more immediately charming. I'd say drink some now to enjoy the vibrant fruit, and cellar the rest for 3-5 years if you want to see them really hit their stride.
What food pairs well with McLaren Vale wines?▼
Those full-bodied McLaren Vale Shiraz wines are perfect for grilled meats - think lamb chops, beef steaks, or even barbecue with rich, smoky flavors. The Grenache pairs beautifully with Mediterranean dishes like herb-crusted chicken, ratatouille, or charcuterie boards. The generous, fruit-forward style of these wines can handle bold spices and rich sauces without being overwhelmed.
How does McLaren Vale compare to other major wine regions?▼
McLaren Vale sits somewhere between the elegance of Burgundy and the power of Napa - it's got that Australian generosity but with real finesse thanks to those cooling sea breezes. Compared to Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale Shiraz tends to be slightly more restrained and food-friendly, while still delivering that classic Australian richness. The region punches above its weight internationally, especially considering it's relatively compact compared to giants like Bordeaux or Tuscany.
