Mosel appellations
The upper Mosel near the Luxembourg border, where the traditional Elbling grape still dominates. The limestone soils here are unique within the Mosel region, producing crisp, refreshing whites that feel closer in style to Luxembourg's Moselle wines than to the slate-driven Rieslings downstream.

Climate
The upper Mosel valley experiences a cooler, more continental climate than the middle Mosel, with greater diurnal temperature variation that helps preserve acidity in the grapes. The limestone soils also reflect more sunlight than slate, creating additional warmth during the day while cooling more rapidly at night.
Terroir
The Bereich Obermosel sits on Triassic Muschelkalk limestone bedrock, rich in fossilized shells and marine deposits from ancient seas. This limestone foundation provides excellent drainage while allowing vine roots to penetrate deeply, and the calcareous soils moderate water retention better than the slate-dominated areas downstream.
