Bereich Saar
Mosel
Mosel appellations
The Saar tributary produces Rieslings of extraordinary finesse and racy acidity. In great vintages, sites like Scharzhofberg, Wiltinger Kupp, and Ockfener Bockstein rival anything in Germany. The cooler climate and slate soils give the wines a laser-like precision.
The wines of Bereich Saar are made primarily from Riesling.

Terroir & Character
Climate
The narrow Saar valley creates a cooler, more continental microclimate than the main Mosel, with greater diurnal temperature variation that preserves acidity and extends the growing season. Morning fog from the river moderates temperature extremes while the slate soils radiate heat during cool nights.
Terroir
The Saar valley is underlain by Devonian slate formations, primarily weathered gray slate mixed with quartzite bands that create excellent drainage while retaining some moisture. The fractured slate bedrock forces vine roots to penetrate deeply through the schistose layers, accessing mineral-rich water reserves while the steep slate slopes provide optimal drainage and prevent waterlogging.
