Northern Rhône
Rhône Valley
Rhône Valley appellations
A narrow ribbon of steep, sun-drenched slopes along the Rhône river, producing some of France’s most distinctive wines. Syrah reigns supreme here, from the perfumed elegance of Côte Rôtie to the powerful intensity of Hermitage and the approachable charm of Crozes-Hermitage. Condrieu and Château-Grillet produce rare, aromatic Viognier.
The wines of Northern Rhône are made primarily from Syrah, Grenache, Mourvèdre and other Rhône Valley varieties.

Terroir & Character
Climate
The steep, south-facing granite slopes create a sun trap effect that maximizes heat accumulation and reflection, while the Rhône river moderates temperature extremes and provides cooling breezes. The narrow valley concentrates and funnels the strong Mistral wind, which helps dry the vines and prevent disease but can also stress them during critical growing periods.
Terroir
The Northern Rhône sits on ancient crystalline bedrock of granite, schist, and gneiss from the Massif Central, with some limestone outcrops, particularly in the north. These hard, metamorphic rocks create excellent drainage on the steep slopes while forcing vine roots to penetrate deep into fractured bedrock, creating water stress that concentrates flavors. The thin topsoil layer over impermeable granite bedrock creates rapid runoff during rains but retains heat to extend the growing season.
