Terroir & Character
Climate
The broad valley floor creates a distinctly warmer, drier Mediterranean climate than the northern Rhône, with the Mistral wind providing crucial cooling and disease prevention. Heat retention from the galets roulés and protection from surrounding hills creates ideal ripening conditions for late-maturing varieties.
Terroir
The Southern Rhône sits on Miocene marine sediments over Mesozoic limestone bedrock, creating excellent drainage through fractured rock layers. The famous galets roulés (quartzite pebbles) from ancient Rhône floods overlay clay-limestone soils, storing daytime heat and releasing it at night while forcing vine roots deep into the calcareous substrate. The water table lies well below root zones due to the porous limestone foundation and elevated terraces.
