Borrenes

Bierzo

South-western Bierzo near Lake Carucedo and Las Médulas. Slate-dominated, steep, with small paraje-classified vineyards that increasingly catch the attention of single-site producers.

The wines of Borrenes are made primarily from Godello, Mencía.

Climate

South-facing slopes catch the strongest light in the DO, with warm days softened by cool air drawn down off the Aquilianos. Rainfall is the lowest in Bierzo. Ripening is fast and fruit is opulent, with pronounced diurnal range preserving acidity.

Terroir

SlateQuartzite

A mosaic of slate and red iron-rich subsoils — the same gold-bearing strata the Romans worked at Las Médulas. South of the Sil, schist and slate dominate; closer to the river, mineral-rich alluvial gravels appear. Drainage is rapid, vigour low.
