Climate

Protected by the Tualatin Mountains to the west, this appellation experiences warmer temperatures and less rainfall than most Willamette Valley AVAs. The rolling hills create numerous mesoclimates with excellent air drainage, extending the growing season while maintaining diurnal temperature variation.

Terroir

LoessVolcanic basaltLaurelwood

The Tualatin Hills sit atop Columbia River Basalt bedrock overlain by Missoula Flood deposits and windblown Laurelwood loess soils. This layered structure creates excellent drainage through the porous volcanic rock while the clay-rich basalt underneath can perch water tables at variable depths, forcing vine roots to work through multiple soil horizons.
