Rheinhessen appellations

The northwest corner of Rheinhessen, where the Rhine bends past the Niederwalddenkmal and meets the Nahe. Steep slate and quartzite slopes around Bingen, Münster-Sarmsheim and Ingelheim produce nervy, mineral Riesling alongside historically important Spätburgunder. Famous Großen Lagen include Scharlachberg and Pares.

The wines of Bereich Bingen are made primarily from Pinot Noir, Riesling, Pinot Gris and other Rheinhessen varieties.

Terroir & Character

Climate

The Rhine bend at Bingen funnels air between the Hunsrück and Taunus, producing strong west winds and lower humidity than the Roter Hang downstream. Sites along the river benefit from water reflection and warm valley air, while inland Siefersheim sits in the rain shadow of the Hunsrück at higher elevation, making it one of the cooler corners of Rheinhessen with later harvests. Ingelheim, sheltered by the Mainzer Sand and the river bend, is consistently among the warmest spots in the region, historically warm enough for serious red wine.

Terroir

QuartziteSlateSandstoneLoess

Three bedrock systems sit side by side. Around Bingen itself, Devonian quartzite and Hunsrück slate surface on the Scharlachberg, geologically continuous with the Rheingau across the river. South and east, the Mainzer Becken Tertiary marine deposits dominate: fossil-rich Kalktuff and Kalksandstein at Appenheim (Hundertgulden) and Nieder-Hilbersheim, layered with loess and loess-loam on the gentler slopes. At the western edge around Siefersheim and Wöllstein, the bedrock shifts to Permian rhyolite porphyry (Wöllsteiner Vulkanit), giving sites like Heerkretz and Höllberg a distinctive volcanic stamp.
