Bairrada

Portugal

About Bairrada

A small but important region between the Dão mountains and the Atlantic coast. Bairrada is the homeland of Baga, a thick-skinned, tannic grape that produces some of Portugal's most age-worthy reds. After decades of producing rustic, overly tannic wines, a new generation led by producers like Filipa Pato, Vadio, and Luis Pato has transformed the region's reputation. Modern Bairrada Baga combines power with elegance and remarkable aging potential. The region is also Portugal's main center for traditional-method sparkling wine, with ambitions to rival Champagne.

Terroir & Character

Climate

maritime Atlanticmoderate temperatureshigh rainfallcool breezes

Maritime Atlantic, the most oceanic of Portugal's major wine regions. Moderate temperatures year-round (rarely above 35°C), with significant rainfall (700-1000mm annually). The proximity to the coast brings cool breezes and morning fog. This maritime influence gives Baga its naturally high acidity and slow ripening, essential for the grape's best expressions.

Terroir

heavy claylimestonesand near coastlow altitude

Predominantly heavy clay soils (barro in Portuguese, giving the region its name). The clay retains water well, providing a buffer against summer drought but also creating challenges in wet years. Limestone outcrops appear in some areas, producing wines with more mineral expression. Near the coast, sandier soils produce lighter, more aromatic wines. The flattest vineyards sit at just 50-100m altitude.
