Terroir & Character
Climate
Volnay benefits from a slightly warmer microclimate than its neighbors due to optimal sun exposure on its south-facing amphitheater of slopes, while being protected from harsh winds by the hill of Monthélie to the west.
Terroir
Volnay sits on Jurassic limestone bedrock from the Bathonian period, overlaid with iron-rich red marl soils that contain fossilized marine sediments. The limestone base provides excellent drainage while allowing roots to penetrate deep, and the iron content in the marl gives the distinctive reddish-brown color to many vineyard plots.
