Classification System
South Africa's Wine of Origin scheme, instituted in 1973, demarcates where a wine may claim to come from: geographical units like the Western Cape, then regions, districts, and finally wards. A WO claim means 100 percent of the grapes grew inside the named area, with the certification seal numbered on every bottle.
Ward
The tightest demarcation, like Simonsberg-Stellenbosch or Hemel-en-Aarde Valley
District
The names labels lead with, Stellenbosch to Walker Bay
Estate / Single Vineyard
A registered contiguous estate, or a registered single vineyard of at most 6 hectares
What Walker Bay produces
Red
South Africa's benchmark Pinot Noir: perfumed, savoury, and structured, from the clay soils of the Hemel-en-Aarde.
White
Tense, mineral Chardonnay to rival the country's best, plus honest old-vine Chenin Blanc from Bot River.

Climate
Genuinely cool maritime: the vineyards sit just a few kilometres from the cold Atlantic swell of Walker Bay, and onshore winds plus regular sea mist keep summer temperatures modest. Ripening is long and slow, harvest comes weeks after the warm inland districts, and the style is built on freshness rather than power.
Terroir
The prize is clay: weathered Bokkeveld shale rich in clay threads through the Hemel-en-Aarde, giving Pinot Noir and Chardonnay uncommon depth for the New World, with decomposed granite on the higher ridge. Bot River mixes shale and sandstone over rolling hills. Vineyards climb from near sea level to about 400 metres at the top of the ridge.
