VDP Vineyard Classification
The Ahr has several VDP member estates whose top Pinot Noirs come from classified vineyard sites on the steep slate and greywacke slopes above the river.

Erste Lage
Premier Cru equivalent, excellent sites
Ortswein
Village-level wines from a named commune
Gutswein

Trockenbeerenauslese
Rarest, from individually selected dried berries
Eiswein
Pressed from naturally frozen grapes
Beerenauslese
From individually selected overripe berries
Auslese
From selected bunches of very ripe grapes
Spätlese
Late harvest, richer and riper
Kabinett
Lightest Prädikat, elegant and lower alcohol

Regional appellations
Qualitätswein (QbA)

Prädikatswein
Quality wine distinguished by ripeness at harvest, from light Kabinett through Spätlese, Auslese, and the rare sweet Beerenauslese, Trockenbeerenauslese, and Eiswein.

Climate
Cool continental with a warm microclimate created by the sheltered river valley. The Eifel Mountains provide protection from harsh northern winds, while the winding river moderates temperatures and extends the growing season, creating perfect conditions for slowly ripening red grapes.
Terroir
Steep, terraced vineyards carved into slate and volcanic rock soils along the Ahr River. The dark slate absorbs heat during the day and radiates it back at night, helping ripen grapes in this northern latitude. Volcanic soils add mineral complexity, while the river's influence creates diverse microclimates within individual vineyard sites.
