About Marche

Facing the Adriatic on Italy's eastern coast, the Marche is defined by Verdicchio, one of Italy's most underrated white grapes. Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi, from the hills near the coast, produces herbaceous, nutty, age-worthy whites with a distinctive bitter almond finish. Verdicchio di Matelica, from a cooler inland valley, tends to be more mineral and structured. Red wines from Montepulciano and Sangiovese (under the Rosso Conero and Rosso Piceno DOCs) are robust and earthy. The region remains relatively undiscovered internationally, offering excellent value.

Frequently Asked Questions

What makes Marche wine special?
Marche is all about Verdicchio, one of Italy's most underrated white grapes that deserves way more attention. These wines have this incredible combination of herbaceous and nutty flavors with a distinctive bitter almond finish that's totally unique. What really sets them apart is their aging potential - good Verdicchio can develop beautifully over years, which is rare for Italian whites.
What are the best Marche vintages?
The recent vintages have been really strong - 2020, 2021, and 2023 all scored 4/5 for their excellent balance of acidity and structure. 2020 was particularly outstanding with great depth and aging potential, while 2021 showed beautiful mineral precision. Even 2016 is still drinking well now, though you should probably enjoy those bottles soon.
What grapes are grown in Marche?
Verdicchio is absolutely the star grape of Marche and really defines the region's identity. You'll mainly encounter Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi, which comes from the coastal hills and produces the region's most celebrated wines. While there are other varieties grown there, Verdicchio is what you should be seeking out if you want the true Marche experience.
Is 2023 a good year for Marche?
Yes, 2023 was quite good despite being a hot vintage - it earned a solid 4/5 rating. The impressive thing is that Verdicchio's natural structure and acidity held up really well against the heat, which shows the grape's resilience. You're getting wines with good freshness even in what was challenging conditions across much of Europe.
When should I drink Marche 2023?
You can definitely enjoy 2023 Marche wines now - they're showing beautifully with good acidity and structure intact. Since Verdicchio ages well, you could also cellar them for 3-5 years to see how they develop more complexity. The 2023s have the balance to reward either approach, so it really depends on your preference for fresh fruit versus evolved flavors.
What food pairs well with Marche wines?
Verdicchio is fantastic with seafood, especially given Marche's location on the Adriatic coast - think grilled fish, seafood risotto, or crudo. The wine's nutty, herbaceous character also works beautifully with roasted chicken, mushroom dishes, and aged cheeses. That distinctive bitter almond finish makes it surprisingly good with slightly richer preparations than you'd expect from a white wine.
How does Marche compare to other major wine regions?
Marche flies under the radar compared to Tuscany or Piedmont, but that's actually great news for wine lovers looking for value. While those famous regions focus on reds, Marche offers some of Italy's best white wines at much more reasonable prices. The quality and aging potential of good Verdicchio rivals whites from much more expensive regions - it's honestly one of Italy's best-kept secrets.
