About Puglia

Italy's heel is one of its largest wine-producing regions, long known for bulk production but increasingly recognized for quality. Primitivo (genetically identical to California's Zinfandel) produces rich, ripe, generously fruity reds, especially from the Gioia del Colle DOC inland and Primitivo di Manduria near the coast. Negroamaro, the other key red grape, makes deeply colored, earthy wines in the Salento peninsula. Puglia's flat terrain, abundant sunshine, and ancient bush-trained vines (alberello) produce wines of remarkable concentration. A new generation of producers is challenging the region's bulk reputation with serious, terroir-driven wines.

Frequently Asked Questions

What makes Puglia wine special?
Puglia is Italy's heel and one of its largest wine regions, historically known for bulk production but now emerging as a quality powerhouse. The region's specialty is Primitivo, which is genetically identical to California's Zinfandel, producing incredibly rich and ripe reds with generous fruit flavors. The hot southern Italian climate creates these intensely concentrated wines, especially from areas like Gioia del Colle DOC.
What are the best Puglia vintages?
Recent standout years include 2021, which was excellent for southern Italian reds with beautiful balance, and 2016 delivered exceptional reds with dark fruit and firm structure. 2017, 2019, and 2022 were all very good vintages, each scoring 4/5 stars. These years consistently show concentrated fruit, well-managed tannins, and the rich, sun-warmed character Puglia is known for.
What grapes are grown in Puglia?
The two key grapes are Primitivo and Negroamaro. Primitivo is the star - it's genetically identical to Zinfandel and produces those rich, ripe, generously fruity reds that put Puglia on the map. Negroamaro is the other important red variety, offering more structure and complexity to complement Primitivo's fruit-forward style.
Is 2022 a good year for Puglia?
Yes, 2022 was a very good vintage for Puglia, earning 4 out of 5 stars. The Primitivo from that year shows rich, sun-warmed fruit with supple tannins - exactly what you want from this region. It's drinking beautifully now and represents the quality leap Puglia has been making in recent years.
When should I drink Puglia 2022?
Puglia 2022 is drinking great right now since it has those supple tannins that make it approachable young. These Primitivo wines are generally meant to be enjoyed within 3-5 years of vintage for their vibrant fruit character. You can certainly cellar it for a few more years, but the rich, sun-warmed fruit is at its peak expression now.
What food pairs well with Puglia wines?
The rich, ripe Primitivo wines are perfect with grilled meats, especially lamb or beef with herbs. Think southern Italian cuisine - pasta with hearty meat sauces, aged cheeses like Pecorino, or even barbecue works beautifully with that generous fruit character. The wines have enough body and warmth to stand up to bold, flavorful dishes.
How does Puglia compare to other major wine regions?
Puglia is like Italy's answer to California's Central Valley - historically bulk production but now showing serious quality potential. Unlike Tuscany or Piedmont with their cooler climates and more structured wines, Puglia delivers immediate pleasure with rich, ripe fruit. It's more accessible than traditional Italian regions but increasingly sophisticated, offering great value compared to more established areas.
