About Kremstal

Kremstal is a DAC wine region in Lower Austria, named after the town of Krems where the river Krems meets the Danube. The region produces outstanding Grüner Veltliner and Riesling from a mix of loess, primary rock, and gravel soils. The diverse terroir creates wines ranging from fresh and fruit-driven to powerful and mineral, depending on whether vineyards sit on the sandy loess terraces or the steep gneiss and mica schist slopes.

Frequently Asked Questions

What makes Kremstal wine special?
Kremstal's magic comes from its incredibly diverse terroir - you've got loess soils, primary rock, and gravel all creating different expressions of the same grape. The region sits right where the Krems river meets the Danube, which creates perfect conditions for both crisp, mineral-driven wines and richer, more complex styles. The Grüner Veltliner and Riesling from here show remarkable precision and site-specific character.
What are the best Kremstal vintages?
Recent standout years include 2019, 2017, and 2015 - all produced excellent Grüner Veltliner with great balance of fruit and minerality. 2016 was particularly strong for Riesling, with wines showing beautiful acidity and aging potential. The 2013 vintage also produced some exceptional age-worthy wines that are drinking beautifully now.
What grapes are grown in Kremstal?
Grüner Veltliner and Riesling are the stars here - they're the only two varieties allowed under Kremstal DAC status. Grüner Veltliner dominates the plantings and produces everything from fresh, peppery styles to rich, complex reserve wines. The Rieslings are typically dry and show brilliant mineral character from the diverse soil types.
What food pairs well with Kremstal wines?
Kremstal Grüner Veltliner is fantastic with Austrian classics like schnitzel, roasted pork, or anything with green herbs and vegetables. The mineral-driven Rieslings pair beautifully with freshwater fish, especially trout or pike-perch from the Danube. Both wines work great with Asian cuisine - the Grüner's spice and the Riesling's acidity handle spicy dishes really well.
How does Kremstal compare to other major wine regions?
Kremstal sits nicely between its famous neighbors - it's more structured and mineral than Kamptal but shows more elegance than the powerful wines from Wachau. Compared to German Riesling regions, Kremstal produces drier styles with more body and richness. The Grüner Veltliners here often show more finesse than those from Weinviertel while maintaining excellent food-friendliness.
