About Sud-Ouest

Southwest France (Sud-Ouest) is a sprawling, diverse region between Bordeaux and the Pyrenees, home to some of France's most distinctive and age-worthy reds. Cahors produces the original Malbec (locally called Cot or Auxerrois), giving deeply colored, tannic reds from the Lot valley's limestone plateaus. Madiran grows Tannat, one of France's most powerful grapes, producing wines that rival the best of Bordeaux for structure and longevity. Jurancon, in the Pyrenean foothills, makes remarkable sweet and dry whites from Gros and Petit Manseng. Gaillac, Fronton, Marcillac, and Irouleguy add further diversity, each with its own indigenous grapes and character. The region offers exceptional value and authenticity.

Frequently Asked Questions

What makes Sud-Ouest wine special?
Sud-Ouest is France's wild west of winemaking - it's home to indigenous grape varieties you won't find anywhere else, like Tannat, Malbec (called Côt here), and Négrette. The region preserves ancient winemaking traditions while producing incredibly diverse styles, from the powerful reds of Madiran to the sweet wines of Jurançon. What really sets it apart is how each sub-region has maintained its unique identity and local grape varieties.
What are the best Sud-Ouest vintages?
Recent standout years include 2020, 2016, and 2010 for most Sud-Ouest regions, offering great concentration and balance. For Madiran specifically, 2005 and 2009 were exceptional vintages that are drinking beautifully now. The 2019 vintage is also showing real promise, especially for the white wines of Jurançon and Gaillac.
What grapes are grown in Sud-Ouest?
Sud-Ouest is a treasure trove of unique varieties - Tannat dominates in Madiran, Malbec thrives in Cahors, and you'll find Négrette in Fronton. For whites, there's Petit Manseng and Gros Manseng in Jurançon, Mauzac in Gaillac, and Len de l'El (literally 'far from the eye'). You'll also see international varieties like Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot blended with these local heroes.
What food pairs well with Sud-Ouest wines?
These wines are made for the robust cuisine of southwestern France - think duck confit, cassoulet, and grilled meats with the powerful Tannat-based reds from Madiran. Cahors Malbec is fantastic with lamb and game, while the sweet Jurançon wines are magical with foie gras or Roquefort cheese. The lighter reds from Fronton work beautifully with charcuterie and regional sausages.
How does Sud-Ouest compare to other major wine regions?
Sud-Ouest offers incredible value compared to Bordeaux or Burgundy - you get authentic, terroir-driven wines at a fraction of the price. While Bordeaux focuses on blending international varieties, Sud-Ouest celebrates indigenous grapes that tell unique stories. The region is less polished and commercial than major appellations, which means more personality and character in the bottle, though sometimes less consistency.
