About Vulkanland Steiermark
Eastern Steiermark, where extinct volcanoes punctuate the landscape and basalt-and-tuff soils define the wine. The DAC favours aromatic, perfumed whites — Traminer, Sauvignon Blanc, Welschriesling, Pinot Blanc — and a small but rising production of Pinot Noir. Top growers (Tement, Polz, Frauwallner, Winkler-Hermaden) work hillside vineyards on volcanic remnants like Klöcher Berg, Steinberg, and Riegersburg. Klöch is famous for spicy Traminer; the area around St. Anna and Tieschen for Sauvignon Blanc.

Climate
ContinentalPannonian influenceWarm summersStrong diurnalsHigh rainfall
Continental with strong Pannonian and Mediterranean influences from the south. Warm summers, cold winters, and large diurnal swings preserve aromatic intensity. Higher rainfall than other Austrian zones — locally this is "Vulkanland" not just for the geology but the lush green it produces.

Volcanic basalt, tuff, and lava breccia from extinct Pleistocene volcanoes — Stradner Kogel, Klöcher Berg, Riegersburg. Calcareous sand and clay between the volcanic outcrops. Steep south-facing terraces are the norm.
