Wachau
Austria
About Wachau
A narrow, terraced valley along the Danube in Niederösterreich (Lower Austria), the Wachau is one of Europe's most dramatic wine landscapes. Steep granite and gneiss slopes produce Austria's most concentrated and mineral white wines. The region's own classification system (Steinfeder, Federspiel, Smaragd) reflects increasing ripeness and body. Grüner Veltliner dominates, producing wines of remarkable depth and spice, while Riesling from the steepest sites rivals the finest from Germany. The Wachau's continental climate, with warm days and cool nights funnelled by the Danube, preserves bright acidity even in ripe vintages.

Terroir & Character
Climate
Continental climate moderated by the Danube River, with warm days and cool nights that extend the growing season. This temperature variation preserves acidity while allowing full flavor development, creating wines with remarkable freshness and complexity.
Terroir
Primary rock (gneiss and granite) forms the backbone, creating the famous minerality in Wachau wines. Thin topsoils force vines to struggle, concentrating flavors. Steep, south-facing terraced slopes maximize sun exposure while the Danube River provides cooling influence and reflection.
