About Mallorca

The largest of Spain's Balearic Islands has a wine history stretching back to Roman times, but modern Mallorcan wine is a recent story. Two DOs, Binissalem in the central plain and Pla i Llevant in the east, anchor the island's production. Indigenous red grapes Callet and Manto Negro produce aromatic, medium-bodied reds with Mediterranean herbs and soft tannins. The white grape Prensal Blanc (also called Moll) makes fresh, floral wines. International varieties like Cabernet, Merlot, and Chardonnay also thrive here. The combination of limestone soils, warm days, cool mountain nights from the Serra de Tramuntana, and constant sea breezes gives Mallorcan wines a character distinct from mainland Spain. A growing number of producers focus on organic farming and old-vine indigenous grapes.

Terroir & Character

Climate

drymediterranean

Classic Mediterranean climate with hot, dry summers and mild winters. Sea breezes moderate temperatures and the island's varied elevations create microclimates, allowing grapes to retain freshness and develop complex flavors despite the warm conditions.

Diverse soils ranging from limestone and clay in the central plains to red clay and gravel in higher elevations. The island's geology creates excellent drainage while retaining enough moisture for vines. Frequently Asked Questions

What makes Mallorca wine special?
Mallorca's uniqueness comes from its indigenous grapes like Callet and Manto Negro for reds, plus Prensal Blanc for whites - varieties you won't find anywhere else. The island has been making wine since Roman times, but the modern wine scene really took off recently with two designated DOs: Binissalem and Pla i Llevant. The Mediterranean climate and island terroir create aromatic wines with a distinct character that's truly their own.
What are the best Mallorca vintages?
Recent standout years include 2020, which was exceptional for both reds and whites, and 2023 showing excellent balance across the board. 2022 also produced very good reds with that beautiful Mediterranean warmth coming through. The 2020 whites are drinking beautifully right now, while the reds from these top vintages still have good aging potential.
What grapes are grown in Mallorca?
The stars are the indigenous varieties - Callet and Manto Negro for reds, which produce really aromatic wines, and Prensal Blanc for whites. These native grapes are what make Mallorcan wine so distinctive since they're perfectly adapted to the island's Mediterranean climate. You'll also find some international varieties, but the local grapes are where the real character lies.
Is 2023 a good year for Mallorca?
Yes, 2023 was excellent across the board in Mallorca! Both the reds and whites are rated 4 out of 5, with the reds showing particularly excellent balance. The whites are also performing beautifully, making 2023 one of the stronger recent vintages for the island.
When should I drink Mallorca 2023?
The 2023 whites are drinking beautifully now and should be enjoyed while they're fresh and vibrant. The 2023 reds, with their excellent balance, can be enjoyed now but also have the structure to age gracefully for several more years. I'd say drink the whites within the next 2-3 years and the reds anytime over the next 5-8 years.
What food pairs well with Mallorca wines?
Mallorcan wines are perfect with Mediterranean cuisine - think grilled seafood, paella, and Spanish tapas for the aromatic reds made from Callet and Manto Negro. The Prensal Blanc whites are fantastic with fresh fish, shellfish, and lighter fare. Given the island location, anything with olive oil, tomatoes, and herbs will sing with these wines.
How does Mallorca compare to other major wine regions?
Mallorca is much smaller and more boutique compared to major Spanish regions like Rioja or Ribera del Duero, but that's part of its charm. While those regions focus on Tempranillo, Mallorca's indigenous grapes like Callet and Manto Negro offer something completely unique. The island's modern wine renaissance is relatively recent compared to established regions, but the quality has been climbing rapidly, especially since the 2000s.
