About Wien

The only major capital city in the world that produces commercial wine inside its boundaries. Vineyards line the slopes of the Vienna Woods on the city's northern edge — Nußberg, Bisamberg, Mauerberg, Maurer Berg — making mostly white wines, with the Gemischter Satz DAC (a field-blend of multiple grape varieties co-planted, co-harvested, and co-fermented) as the defining style. The Heuriger tradition, where producers pour their own wine in their own taverns, keeps the city's wine culture intensely local.

Pannonian-continental: warm summers, cold winters, low rainfall. The Vienna Woods and the Danube create varied mesoclimates within the city.

Limestone (Leithakalk and Hauptdolomit), loess, schist, and gravel — small-scale variation across the city's slopes. Nußberg is famously chalky-limestone; Bisamberg is loess-driven.
