About Südsteiermark

Südsteiermark (South Styria) is Austria's answer to Sancerre: a region that has made its name with crystalline, precise Sauvignon Blanc. The steep, terraced hillsides along the Slovenian border produce some of Austria's most exciting white wines. Beyond Sauvignon Blanc, the region excels with Gelber Muskateller, Morillon (Chardonnay), and Welschriesling. The best vineyards sit on south-facing slopes with dramatic views across the rolling green hills.

Frequently Asked Questions

What makes Südsteiermark wine special?
Südsteiermark is Austria's crown jewel for crisp, mineral-driven white wines, especially Sauvignon Blanc that rivals Sancerre. The steep, terraced vineyards along the Slovenian border create perfect conditions for incredibly precise, crystalline wines with brilliant acidity. The region's unique terroir of volcanic soils and cool climate produces wines with exceptional purity and finesse that really put Austrian whites on the world map.
What are the best Südsteiermark vintages?
Recent standout years include 2019 and 2021, which produced exceptional balance and concentration in the whites. 2018 was also excellent, giving wines with great intensity while maintaining the region's signature freshness. Generally, the consistent cool climate means most vintages from the past decade have been quite reliable, with 2020 being particularly notable for its mineral precision.
What grapes are grown in Südsteiermark?
Sauvignon Blanc is the star here, producing the region's most celebrated wines with incredible precision and minerality. Gelber Muskateller (Yellow Muscat) is another specialty that makes beautifully aromatic, dry wines. You'll also find excellent Chardonnay and Welschriesling, both benefiting from the cool climate and steep vineyard sites.
What food pairs well with Südsteiermark wines?
The crisp Sauvignon Blancs are perfect with fresh goat cheese, asparagus, and herb-driven dishes - think spring vegetables and green salads. Gelber Muskateller pairs beautifully with spicy Asian cuisine and aromatic dishes. The region's wines also complement local Austrian specialties like pumpkin seed oil salads and fresh river fish.
How does Südsteiermark compare to other major wine regions?
Südsteiermark's Sauvignon Blanc rivals Loire Valley's Sancerre and Pouilly-Fumé in precision and minerality, but with a distinctly Austrian character - often more fruit-forward yet still crisp. Compared to New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc, these wines are more restrained and mineral-driven rather than tropical. It's become one of Europe's most exciting cool-climate white wine regions, competing quality-wise with Alsace and Austria's own Wachau.
