About Somontano

Somontano means "beneath the mountain", and the name tells you most of what matters: vineyards climbing from the Ebro basin toward the Pyrenees around the old cathedral town of Barbastro. The Lalanne family planted Cabernet and Merlot here in the nineteenth century, but the modern story starts in 1984, when the DO was approved and ambitious wineries like Viñas del Vero, Enate and Bodega Pirineos bet on international varieties done with Spanish warmth. The result is one of Spain's most quietly cosmopolitan regions: Gewürztraminer and Chardonnay of real poise, polished Cabernet and Merlot, and a new generation rediscovering the native Moristel and Parraleta. With Alquézar's canyons and the Sierra de Guara on the doorstep, it is as rewarding to visit as to taste.

Climate

ContinentalDryCold wintersHigh diurnal swingPyrenean shelter

Continental with a Mediterranean echo and the Pyrenees standing guard to the north. Winters are cold, summers hot and dry, and cool night air drains off the mountains into the vineyards, stretching ripening and protecting aromatics. Rainfall is modest at around 500 mm, and the northern shelter softens the worst of the Ebro valley's cierzo wind.

LimestoneSandstoneCalcareous clayStony topsoilsFoothill terraces

Brownish limestone and sandstone soils over calcareous clay, laid down where the Pyrenean foothills soften into the Ebro basin. Vineyards sit mostly between 350 and 650 metres along the Vero and Cinca rivers, on poor, stony, fast-draining ground that keeps yields naturally modest, with the highest parcels reaching toward 1,000 metres.

Frequently Asked Questions

What makes Somontano wine special?▼
Somontano sits at the foot of the Pyrenees around the cathedral town of Barbastro, and it is one of Spain's most quietly cosmopolitan regions. The DO was approved in 1984, and modern wineries like Vinas del Vero, Enate and Bodega Pirineos built its name on international varieties handled with mountain freshness: Spain's benchmark Gewurztraminer, creamy barrel-fermented Chardonnay, and polished Cabernet and Merlot. The native Moristel and Parraleta grapes add a wilder local voice that a new generation is bringing back.
What grapes are grown in Somontano?▼
The Pliego authorizes eight reds and seven whites. The headline reds are Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Tempranillo, Syrah and Garnacha, alongside the native Moristel and the rare Parraleta. Whites lead with Chardonnay and Gewurztraminer, backed by Macabeo, Garnacha Blanca, Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc and the local Alcanon. The Cabernet story goes back further than you might think: the Lalanne family planted Bordeaux varieties near Barbastro in the nineteenth century.
What does Somontano Gewurztraminer taste like?▼
Rose petal, lychee and citrus blossom, but in a drier, fresher register than Alsace. Cool night air draining off the Pyrenees keeps the acidity lively, so the wines stay perfumed without turning heavy or oily. It is a lovely bottle to open with spiced dishes, soft cheeses, or simply as a surprising aperitif for friends who think they know Spanish white wine.
What food pairs well with Somontano wines?▼
Start with the region's own table: ternasco, the roast milk-fed lamb of Aragon, is made for the Cabernet and Merlot blends, and wild mushroom rice dishes love the older reds. The Gewurztraminer is brilliant with spiced food and soft cheeses, while the Chardonnay handles roast chicken and creamy pasta. Aged sheep cheese and longaniza sausage round out a very happy evening.
How does Somontano compare to other Spanish wine regions?▼
Where Rioja and Ribera del Duero are built on Tempranillo tradition, Somontano took the opposite bet: international grapes, modern cellars and aromatic whites. The result sits closer in spirit to a New World boutique region than to classic Castilian wine country, and prices remain friendly for the quality. If you enjoy polished Cabernet or perfumed whites but want a Spanish accent and Pyrenean freshness, this is your region.
